Trump: Iran has helped commit unspeakable crimes in Syria

Shahin Gobadi, of the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI), not enough is being done to stop the Islamic Republic making WMDs and supporting terrorism.

The PMOI is the largest and most active OPPOSITION movement in Iran that supports a totally secular political system in the country.

The organisation was the first to expose the very existence of Iran’s nuclear programme two decades ago.

Speaking to Daily Star Online, Paris-based Mr Gobadi said: “Iran’s nuclear apparatus still functioning, scientists are working, officials are in place.

“We should be worried about the Iranian regime’s continued work on its ballistic missile programme.

“Bear in mind that with this ballistic missiles programme they do not have a benign objective.

“A lot of these missiles are capable of carrying nuclear warheads and this is despite the fact that the UN security council sanctions resolutions, after the nuclear agreement urging Iran to stop this kind of tests.

“The regime has done test after test after test of this kind of missile.

“It has always played this cat and mouse game with the international community – always tried to keep the nuclear programme secret.”

We live in turbulent times. Trump has the keys to nuclear weapons, and could end work to prevent climate change. Putin is looming in the East, the far-right are on the rise in Europe and Kim Jong-un is developing nuclear weapons of his own. Is this the END of days?

Before his inauguration, Donald Trump asked a security expert three times during a briefing, why the US couldn't use nuclear weapons after he becomes president.

WEAPONS: Shahin Gobadi has warned of Iran's nuclear ambitions

“Of course people should be worried, everyone should worry ”

Shahin Gobadi

Mr Gobadi is calling for a greater global response to the threat Iran poses to the world, saying the problem has previously been “swept under the rug”.

He added: “Of course people should be worried, everyone should worry [about Iran].

“We have been warning that the Iranian regime will act as a pillar for Islamic extremism.

“The world needs to wake up to the threat.”

Mr Gobadi’s comments come just days after Hassan Rouhani won another term as President against hardline cleric Ebrahim Raeisi.

Rouhani has previously admitted deceiving the West about Iran’s nuclear ambitions after UN sanctions.

Just as the election results were announced last weekend, US President Donald Trump slammed the Iranian regime for committing “unspeakable crimes”.

Iranian people burn an effigy of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking in Saudi Arabia, Trump said: "From Lebanon to Iraq and Yemen, Iran funds, arms and trains terrorists, militias and other extremist groups that spread destruction and chaos across the region.

"For decades Iran has fuelled the fires of sectarian conflict and terror, it’s a government that speaks openly of mass murder, vowing the destruction of Israel, death to America, and ruin for many leaders and nations in this very room.

"Among Iran’s most tragic and destabilising interventions, you’ve seen it in Syria. Bolstered by Iran, [President] Assad has committed unspeakable crimes, and the United States has taken firm action in response to the use of banned chemical weapons by the Assad regime, launching 59 missiles at the Syrian air base from where that murderous attack originated.

"Until the Iranian regime is willing to be a partner for peace, all nations of conscience must work together to isolate Iran, deny it funding for terrorism and pray for the day when the Iranian people have the just and righteous government they so richly deserve."
