In a shocking measure by Iran’s so-called judiciary, a young woman, condemned for adultery, was humiliated and inhumanely punished to 74 lashes and washing dead bodies in a morgue for two years! In Islam, it is a requirement for Muslims to be bathed and washed before burial.
A 35-year-old woman, identified as Mina, has been sentenced by the Tehran Criminal Court to “74 lashes and washing dead bodies for two years” for a relationship described by the court as a “devilish relationship with a male stranger.”
Adultery is punished according to Islamic republic laws with 99 lashes. If a married woman is accused of adultery and the charge is proven, she will be sentenced to death through stoning.
Based on Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, signed by Iran decades ago, “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. In particular, no one shall be subjected without his free consent to medical or scientific experimentation.”
The international community and human rights organizations have time and again issued warnings and calls on Iran to eliminate “inhumane and ruthless” punishments. This includes the United Nations General Assembly resolution on 18 December 2013 that expressed deep concern regarding continuous and repeated human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran, in relation with torture, inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment, including lashes and amputating limbs. This resolution also called on the Islamic Republic government to respect its human rights commitments, both in law and practice, especially in regards to ending amputating limbs, lashing, blinding and other forms of torture and ruthless, inhumane and/or degrading treatment and punishments.
