Why the world is looking forward to the Iranian opposition convention in Paris?

Why the world is looking forward to the Iranian opposition convention in Paris?

June 19, 2018 - "Now more than ever the chance and the opportunity to see an end to this regime is here,” said Canadian MP Michael Cooper in a televised message to the upcoming Free Iran Gathering, the Iranian opposition rally scheduled to be held in Paris on June 30. Cooper’s remarks reflect the sentiments of many other politicians from a wide range of political tendencies across the world.
The reason? “There have been some remarkable developments in Iran over the last number of months as people have stood up in cities right across the country to stand up against the regime,” Cooper says. At the end of December, protests erupted across all of Iran, shaking the ruling regime to its very core and bringing it on the verge of total collapse.
It was only through sheer repression that the regime has managed to maintain its tenuous hold on power. But the restive Iranian population, fed up from four decades of repression and corruption, no longer fear the regime’s hollow show of power and have become determined to continue their protests and uprising until they achieve their ultimate goal. The slogans being chanted in the streets of Iran’s cities are directly aimed at the regime’s highest authorities and are calling for the total toppling of the regime.
“It’s also encouraging to see the decision of President Trump to pull out of the disastrous nuclear agreement which would have guaranteed that Iran becomes a nuclear power,” Cooper also said in his remarks. The U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear accord is part of a shift in dealing with the Iranian regime’s threats on the international front. Previously, the dominant policy toward Tehran was to give concessions and try to engage in rapprochement and dialogue. With the change in policy, the Iranian regime is finding it increasingly harder to carry out its nefarious schemes in the Middle East and across the globe.
More than ever, it is now evident that regime change in Iran will be the solution to the problems that the regime of Tehran is posing for its own people and the nations of the world. The Free Iran Gathering will be discussing the democratic alternative to the mullahs’ 40-year rule of blood and terror, symbolized in the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
The MEK, which has been vouching for freedom and democracy in Iran since the 1979 revolution, which saw the mullahs assume power, has paid a heavy price for pursuing regime change in Iran. The mullahs’ regime has executed more than 120 thousand MEK members and supporters. In 1988 alone, the regime massacred 30 thousand political prisoners in the span of a few months.

In the years that followed the invasion of Iraq, the Iranian regime used its influence in Iraq to target MEK camps and murdered and injured hundreds of MEK members.
But despite the hardships, the MEK and NCRI have not relinquished their goal to establish freedom and democracy in Iran. And their perseverance has earned them the respect and support of thousands of politicians, jurists and activists across the world. That support manifests itself every year at the Free Iran Gathering, where tens of thousands of people gather to support the cause of freedom and democracy in Iran.
“What is going on in Paris on June the 30th is a very important event,” said Italian Senator Lucio Malan, who also sent a message to the Free Iran Gathering. “It is an event for a free Iran and for an Iran that will be in cooperation with the other countries of the region and of the world,” Malan added, referring to NCRI President Maryam Rajavi’s platform for the future of Iran, which supports peaceful coexistence with neighboring countries and respects the freedom and rights of all Iranians, regardless of gender, religion and ethnicity.
In another message in support of the Free Iran Gathering, Emma McClarkin, member of the European Parliament since 2009, said, “On the 30th of June I’m delighted that the Iranian community will be meeting in Paris. The freedom of expression that you experienced there hopefully will inspire you to express those very real wishes that you have for real change in Iran. We in the European Parliament will be participating. We’ll be watching. We will be listening and we will always be supporting a free Iran.”
