Steel workers of Ahvaz demonstrated for 33rd consecutive day

Iran, Dec. 13, 2018 - On Wednesday morning, the workers of Iran National Steel Industrial Group began the 33rd-day consecutive day of their strikes and demonstrations in Ahvaz, Khuzestan, where the steel factory is located. The workers had gathered in front of Bank Meli (National Bank) and were chanting, “Workers will die but won’t give in to disgrace.”
The workers are demanding the payment of their months-long unpaid salaries. The steelworkers of Ahvaz are also protesting over deteriorating work conditions and the corrupt practices of the private owners of the INSIG, which is one of the largest steel factories in Iran.
Like many other protesting workers across Iran, the workers of Ahvaz hold the local and central government responsible for their current economic problems. In their slogans, the protesters are likening regime officials to mafia and criminal gangs. The protesters are also calling out the regime for abusing its religious authority to trample the rights of the workers and plunder their wealth.
In recent days, the just demands of the workers of Ahvaz have earned them the support of Iranians throughout Iran and across the globe. In recent days, students, teachers, truck drivers and workers from other parts of Iran have been holding demonstrations and gatherings in solidarity with the steelworkers of Ahvaz.
The Ahvaz steelworkers staged their 32nd day of strikes and demonstrations on Tuesday outside the Khuzestan Province governor’s office. They were all wearing burial cloths, signaling their readiness to pay the ultimate price.
The fed-up workers also gathered outside the city’s main mosque and chanted slogans against the regime’s plundering officials.
The Iranian opposition coalition National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) has issued a statement on strikes and demonstrations staged by the Ahvaz steelworkers.
On Sunday, December 9th, workers from the Ahvaz National Steel Industrial Group continued their strike and demonstrations for the thirtieth day. While marching on the streets of the city and passing by state institutions, the workers, being supported by other people, chanted: "Imprisoned workers must be released"; "Neither threats, nor prison is useful anymore"; "Call of every worker: Death to The tyrant "; "Workers would rather die than accept humiliation"; "We stand; we die until we get our rights "; "Our country is place of thieves, it is unique in the world”; “Rouhani, the liar; where is your key to the problems?” Workers carried banners which read: “Do not sacrifice workers to the brokerage mafia”; “Isn’t authorities’ silence against the Mafia the reason for their complicity?”
