Mustafa Al-Kazemi's government
begins its term by suppressing popular protests
The
Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor condemns the suppression of Iraqi
security forces on Sunday 10 May 2020 of popular protests in Baghdad, and other
areas in the country, and considers that an unsuccessful start for the
government of the new Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi.
The Euro-Med
Monitor indicates that it documented shootings and tear gas throwing at
participants in protests in several governorates who spoke out against local
authorities, especially in Tahrir Square in Baghdad, which resulted in the
killing of one civilian in the city of Basra and wounding of more than 50
people with varying injuries. This coincided with the death of Azhar Shamri as a result of
being wounded by unidentified gunmen in the Sumer neighborhood in Nasiriyah, in
southern Iraq, and the kidnapping of a tribal Sheikh from Tahrir Square in
central Baghdad on Saturday.
The Euro-Med
Monitor renews its call on the Iraqi authorities to fulfill their obligations
under international covenants in respect for the right to peaceful assembly and
expression of opinion and the need to adhere to basic United Nations principles on the
use of force and firearms by law-enforcement officials, which stipulates the
use of security forces, to the greatest extent possible, of nonviolent means
before resorting to force in cases of necessity restricted by surrounding
circumstances.
