Iran, August 31, 2020—As a crisis escalates in the village of Abolfazl near Ahvaz, southwest Iran, state-run media outlets reported that state police chief Hossein Ashtari, Abdolnabi Mousavifard, representative of regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Khuzestan province, the regime governor in Ahvaz, Parviz Fattah, head of so the called “Mostazafan Foundation,” and the head of state-run radio and television, are in close contact other to control the situation.
These contacts came as various regime organs blamed each other in their interviews for the criminal crackdown imposed on the Abolfazl village locals.
This issue has also led to a further power struggle between senior regime officials and even the issue of the Fattah’s resignation has been mentioned.
"What happened has nothing to do with the Foundation's complaint. According to the decision of the [Khuzestan] Provincial Security Council, they have acted in accordance with Article 100 of the Municipality (illegal construction) and the prosecutor's office (land grabbing), and the foundation was merely an observer. If we knew how they acted, we would definitely object. Undoubtedly, the action has been very clumsy, costly and untimely. The law will deal with the land grabbers according to the prosecutor's order. We are unaware," he claimed on Saturday, according to state-run media.
On the other hand, the regime's police force retreated from the village to deny any wrongdoing and claimed its forces did not open fire at the people, according to an August 27 report wired by the official IRNA news agency.
Two days after the brutal crackdown on the people in Abolfazl village, the governor in Ahvaz acknowledged there had been clashes in the area, claiming that several municipal and police officers had been injured. Ahvaz governor Jamal Alami also acknowledged the locals’ fierce resistance in forcing back the regime’s oppressive security forces. “When police forces are severely attacked and injured, and their heads and arms are broken and they feel threatened, they are allowed to use weapons to defend themselves,” he said in an attempt to justify the brutality shown by the security forces.
"Opportunists pushed the locals forward to attack the security forces,” he added.
The regime's governor in Ahwaz did not mention how the regime’s forces opened fire on a group of people, seen widely in videos circulating online. “Some were hit by plastic bullets, but it has not proven yet that the police actually fired such bullets. This is being investigated,” he added on August 27, according to the Youth Journalists Club, an outlet affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).
In the case of the lands of the Foundation in the village of Abolfazl, the police fired several bird shots with a plastic shotgun to control the situation. In this regard, the police and municipal officials were actually the side being attacked, because they were severely attacked with glass and stones, and were also injured,” said Ali Biranvand, the deputy prosecutor in Ahvaz, according to the YJC.

Ahmad Naderi, an MP from Ahwaz, acknowledged that there are many areas in the country similar to the Abolfazl region that are owned by state run entities, such as the Mostazafan Foundation, according to an August 29 report published in the state-run Mashreq News website.
Ahvaz police chief Mohsen Dalvand had previously denied his forces shooting at the people of Abolfazl village. “Officers went to this village only to implement a court order,” he said on August 29, according to the state-run Aftab news agency.
It is worth noting that a number of protesters were wounded by plastic bullets during the brutal attack on the residents of Abolfazl village in Ahvaz.

Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the Iranian regime’s Supreme National Security Council, visits Abolfazl village in southwest Iran—August 30, 2020
Terrified by the escalating public anger, Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, visited Abolfazl village while wearing traditional Arab clothing as a deceptive act sign of respect to the local Iranian-Arab community.
The official IRNA news agency described the move as a to " sooth the villagers.” This is further proof that senior regime officials are extremely concerned of any protests even in a village igniting massive protests to other areas and encouraging others to also rise against the mullahs’ tyranny.
