Domestic violence against women doubled in one year in Iran
The number of women who have filed complaints against domestic violence has risen about six percent in one year. This is while last year there was a 3.2% increase in domestic violence against women.
The Iranian Chief Coroner announced that 90 percent of those who complain against domestic violence are women and this figure has increased 5.8 percent in 2017 compared to the previous year.
Shojaii, head of the Coroner’s Office, announced new data on social ailments on June 9, 2018. Referring to domestic violence, he said, “Most of the medical examinations done at the Coroner’s Office are related to family quarrels and most of those who come for medical examination are women. In 2016, the number of such clients was 77,280 (including 74,180 women and 3,100 men) and in 2017, this number reached 81,729 (including 77,059 women and 4,670 men). Last year, Ali Hadizadegan, head of the Coroner’s Office of Mashhad, had acknowledged that most victims of domestic violence are women between 20 and 35 years of age. He also pointed out that women generally do not complain about the violence they experience and the government’s data does not accurately reflect the reality.
