“According to Health Ministry officials, there is a possibility that we may soon reach 1,000 Covid-19 deaths per day,” said the Tehran City Council chief on Sunday. “In the National Covid-19 Task Force where the President has the final word it is not clear who is against a complete shutdown. Maybe it would be better for the Task Force spokesperson to be more transparent in this regard,” he added, according to the Tasnim news agency, an outlet lined to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force. “Why is it that despite the fact that the Tehran province governor, the National Covid-19 Task Force, the Health Minister, members of the National Covid-19 Task Force, and representatives and members of the Majlis (parliament) Health Commission, along with medical experts are all emphasizing on imposing shutdowns, and according to the President’s chief of staff [Hassan] Rouhani does not oppose such measures, yet we are not witnessing it being implemented? And it is also not clear who is opposing this initiative? Why doesn’t anybody know?”

During Sunday’s Majlis (parliament) session, Majid Nasirayi, MP from Ferdows, South Khorasan province, said, “The coronavirus situation in the country is becoming worse every day and in my district, the number of cases is several times the national average. In the South Khorasan province, the situation is very critical. Across the world, out of every 10,000 Covid-19 patients, around 240 die. But in Iran, we have 500 deaths per 10,000 patients. The reason for this must be examined.”

A member of the Tehran City Council said on Sunday, “Why isn’t Tehran being locked down despite everyone agreeing with the measure? How many Tehran residents must die every day until we shut down the city? I don’t know what the government is after and what is the reason for all this lack of transparency. What must happen in the city so that we reach the conclusion that we are in critical conditions?” (Source: Mehr News Agency, November 15)

The dean of West Azarbaijan Medical Sciences University said on Sunday, “On average, 35-40 people in the province die of Covid-19 every day. The number of hospitalized patients fluctuates between 1,670 and 1,710.” (Source: Mehr News Agency, November 15)

During Sunday’s Majlis session, Fatemeh Maghsoodi, MP from Borujerd, Lorestan province, said, “I don’t know who I must speak to and where I should go. Wherever I go and whomever I speak to, there are strong lobbies that prevent me. The hygiene in my city has been destroyed. A bunch of inefficient persons are toying with the health conditions of the people of Borujerd. Patients in the city barely get access to oxygen. There’s not even mineral water for patients. The mass killing is intensifying by the day and by the moment.”

The state-run Khabar Fori news website quoted an epidemiology professor at Kerman Medical Sciences University as saying, “The number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the country is increasing. If we don’t do anything right now, the spread of the virus will increase in the coming months and the healthcare system will not be able to respond, and the number of deaths will reach a point that we won’t even be able to bury the dead.”

The official IRNA news agency quoted the dean of Kerman Medical Sciences University as saying there had been 27 coronavirus deaths in the province on Sunday. “The total number of deaths has reached 1,531,” the dean added.
