The Middle East, which has a history of political crises that sometimes degenerate into war, is experiencing a new episode of great tension. Two blocs are confronting each other through various means. The first is led by Iran, which has managed to recruit several countries, through a network of militias operating in an area that the King of Jordan had called, in 2004, the "Shiite crescent." Tehran exploits the archipelago of foreign shiite communities to unravel rival state institutions. Three themes are deployed to mobilize its supporters: the fight against American imperialism, anti-Zionism, and support for the Palestinian cause. Iran rules its "colonies" with an iron fist and does not tolerate any dissent. And when the ballot box disavows the groups it controls, the response involves blocking institutions and using omnipotent militias. Iraq is currently paying the price for this, just as Lebanon had long before. It is easy to invoke resistance against Israel to mask a hegemonic policy.

Faced with the alliance of militias led by Tehran, another axis formed between states. The timid "cold peace" policy launched by the Israeli-Egyptian Camp David agreements (1978), was followed with great vigor by the Abraham agreements, signed in 2020 between Israel and two Arab states: the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, later by Sudan and Morocco. All these breakthroughs were sponsored by Washington. Heterogeneous in its appearance, this second axis nevertheless seems solid.

The May 2021 conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza proved that the alliance partners have not wavered. Moreover, this axis is being structured militarily: on its eastern flank, it is deploying Israeli radar in the Gulf to intercept possible Iranian missiles. A win-win situation for all countries threatened by Iran. In Washington, Congress is advocating the regional integration of missile defense systems. However, a unique weak spot remains: Arab regimes are likely to suffer from challenges combining socio-economic crises and relations with Israel.
