Iran and the “Choking Point

Iran and the “Choking Point

4 May 2018-- A member of Iran’s parliament recently used the term the “Choking Point” to describe the Iranian regime’s status quo. This can be defined as increasing public anger aimed at the ruling elite in Tehran.
“When we are facing a variety of crises, we cannot find a solution for the main issue at hand. People have lost all their hope in senior officials. Today we have reached a choking point of hope,” this MP added.
Mohammad Javad Jamali, another Iranian MP, described this “choking point” in the international stage by explaining the year ahead for the Iranian regime.
“This year will be a difficult diplomatic year for us. Especially regarding the decision that [U.S. President Donald] Trump is about to make about the Iran nuclear deal. In the region, Saudi Arabia has launched an all-out war against us. Bahrain and a number of other countries are in similar circumstances,” he said.
The meaning of a “difficult diplomatic year” is witnessed in the regime’s increasing international isolation. This is further proven in Morocco’s decision to sever relations with Iran.
Looking inside Iran, the state-run Arman daily refers an ongoing social crisis following the government’s censoring of Telegram, a popular messaging app used by over 40 million people in Iran.
The piece reads in part:
“Despite all the problems we already have, such as the possible Iran nuclear deal nixing, financial/banking issues and so forth, why are we placing so much energy on Telegram and going down a path that we have already experienced and gained no results from?”
The answer to this question is nothing but the term “choking point,” meaning a dead-end and desperation of a regime engulfed in social tensions and increasing international isolation.
