Iran-backed Hashd al-Sha’bi militias (Popular Mobilization Units) are responsible for killing and injuring thousands of US troops and Iraqis citizens during the past decade, said Ali Khedry, former advisor to US ambassadors in Iraq in an interview with CNN.
Khedry has the longest experience in serving the US Embassy in Baghdad (from 2003 to 2009) as the advisor to five different US ambassadors in Iraq and senior advisor to three US CENTCOM commanders.
The Iraqi government has to this day spent billions of dollars for the Iran-backed militias known as Hashd al-Sha’bi, he said.
He compared measures of the Iran-backed militias similar to the actions and principles of Iraqi forces in the past decade, adding they illegitimately abduct civilians, torture and murder them, while their families would never know their fates. There are video footages of such crimes, Khedry added.
He expressed no hope in the investigation carried out by Iraqi forces.
The investigation is not serious because these measures enjoy the support of the highest ranks in the Iraqi government. They believe they have to change the social fabric of the land in order to defeat ISIS, while this was the very reason of ISIS’ existence in the first place, because millions of people believed they were sidelined by the government itself. Therefore, as long as the Iraqi government fails to reconcile with its own people and adopt fair and just approaches, there is the possibility we will be facing a phenomenon far worse than ISIS in the next few years, Khedry continued.
The US and its allies must hinge their support on the Iraqi government practicing the rule of law and not carry out such atrocities, including war crimes, he added.
If they can’t respect their own and international laws, they must truly be sanctioned, Khedry concluded.
