Austrian MPs take on sponsorships for prisoners…

german details – December 20 2022

With the action one wants to draw international attention to the prisoners in Iran, according to representatives of the ÖVP, SPÖ, Greens and Neos. The FPÖ does not participate.

Austrian MPs sponsor 183 people imprisoned and sentenced to death in Iran. They also send a letter to the Iranian ambassador in Vienna and members of parliament in Iran. With the action, the mandataries from the ÖVP, SPÖ, Greens and Neos want to draw international attention to the prisoners, as they explained at a press conference in Vienna on Tuesday. The FPÖ does not take part in the action.

After the National Council unanimously condemned the imposition of the death penalty in connection with the protests in Iran, the four parties are of the opinion “that we have to give the application more weight” and take further steps, explained the foreign policy spokesman for the ÖVP Reinhold Lopatka. Since the FPÖ deputies did not want to take on any sponsorships, 31 members of the Federal Council jumped in to still come up with the number 183 (total number of members of the National Council).

Regularly asked for information about detainees

It is primarily about stopping the wave of executions. It was already “a minute before 12,” said Harald Troch from the SPÖ. Parliament is well placed to condemn the Iranian regime for the brutal crackdown on demonstrators. However, Troch criticized the lack of an information policy on the part of the federal government regarding the activities of the Austrian embassy in Iran. He also recalled the dual Austrian-Iranian citizen Kamran Ghaderi, who had been imprisoned in Iran for years, and called on the Foreign Ministry to work towards a speedy release.

“International attention means protection for prisoners, that’s the most effective means,” Green Club chairwoman Sigrid Maurer justified the action. “The barbarity of the Iranian regime” is unacceptable. The mandataries would therefore regularly request information about the whereabouts of the detainees. Maurer himself has taken on the sponsorship of the journalist Niloofar Hamedi, who was arrested in police custody for reporting on the death of Mahsa Amini.

Over 18,000 demonstrators have already been arrested

Neos mandatar Helmut Brandstätter is the godfather of the Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi. According to Islamic legal opinion, the prominent musician is accused of “war against God” and “corruption on earth” after videos in which he called for participation in the protests. Both allegations can result in a death sentence. A human rights lawyer explained to him: “There is only one chance to save your life, that’s international pressure,” said Brandstätter.

According to human rights activists, at least 18,000 participants in the system-critical demonstrations in Iran, which have been going on for almost three months, have been arrested so far. Two demonstrators have been executed in recent weeks. According to media reports, at least 23 others face the death penalty.
