US accuses Iran of theft from global universities

The Financial Times- 23 March 20 18- The US government has accused Iran of stealing intellectual property from more than three hundred universities in America, Europe and east Asia, and the HBO television network.
Iran orchestrated “massive, co-ordinated cyber intrusions” to steal data for its Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of its military, the Department of Justice and US Treasury said on Friday.
“Iran is engaged in an ongoing campaign of malicious cyber activity against the United States and our allies,” said Treasury under secretary Sigal Mandelker in a statement.
Mr Trump has long criticised a 2015 nuclear arms deal between the US and Iran that lowered tension between the two countries. This week, the president told reporters, “you’re going to see what I do” about the deal.
“But Iran has not been treating that part of the world or the world itself appropriately. A lot of bad things are happening in Iran,” he added during a meeting with Mohammed Bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Iran’s Middle Eastern rival, Saudi Arabia.
The justice department and Treasury said Iran had outsourced its hacking campaign to the Mabna Institute, an Iranian company set up in 2013 that the US government called “a hacker network”. Approximately 144 universities in the US were targeted as well as another 176 in 21 other countries, like Australia, Canada, China, Germany and the UK, the US government said.
It added that the university accounts of over 1,000 professors had been compromised and used to access online university library systems.
“The exfiltrated data and stolen login credentials acquired through these malicious cyber-enabled activities were used for the benefit of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and were also sold within Iran through at least two websites,” the Treasury said in a statement.
The Mabna Institute and 10 Iranians, including Mabna’s founders, Gholamreza Rafatnejad and Ehsan Mohammedi, were placed under sanction by the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.
The Treasury also sanctioned Behzad Mesri, who was indicted in November on charges of hacking HBO and attempting to extort the company for $6m in bitcoin.
